Before You Begin
The installation kit contains a registration card, installation guide, 3900 device, antenna, 20-pin harness, ring terminal, self-tapping ground screw, star washer, eight 8″ (20 cm) and six 14″ (35.5 cm) zip ties.
Additional tools and supplies that you may need include a digital multimeter, crimping tool, razor knife, wire strippers, electrical tape, and tamper seal compound.
Installation Steps
The following steps provide an overview of the installation process:
- Install preparation.
- Antenna installation.
- Wire identification and preparation.
- Harness installation.
- Accessory installation (if applicable).
- Cable connections.
- Verify and secure the installation.
1. Install preparation.
- Complete the registration card by locating the serial number of the device (labeled “ESN” or “SN”) and copying it onto the card.
3900e Serial Number location:
- Remove the a-pillar plastic and dashboard panels to gain access to the area behind the dashboard cluster.
- Turn the vehicle’s master cut-off switch to the ON position (if the vehicle is equipped with one).
- Complete the registration card by locating the serial number of the device (labeled “ESN” or “SN”) and copying it onto the card.
2. Antenna installation.
The mounting location for the antenna is inside the vehicle on a clear section of the windshield in the lower-left corner as close to the dashboard as possible.- Prepare the section of the windshield for mounting by wiping it down with a dry cloth.
- Remove the backing paper under the antenna to expose the antenna’s adhesive, and press the antenna firmly against the windshield to eliminate as many air pockets as possible.
- Route the antenna cables behind the dashboard cluster toward the mounting location of the GPS device. Stay clear of any moving parts, and ensure the cables will not be pinched or cut when the dashboard is reassembled.
3. Wire identification and preparation.
- Using a digital multimeter, locate a wire that provides at least 12 VDC (+) while the vehicle is on and running and 0 VDC (+) when the key is in the Off or Accessory position. This will be the device’s Ignition Source of power.
- Remove the keys from the ignition and using a digital multimeter, locate a wire that provides between 12 and 24 VDC (+). This will be the device’s Constant Source of power.
- Identify a suitable location on the chassis to mount the ground wire.
Do NOT ground to dash metal.
4. Harness installation.
- Using a razor knife and/or wire strippers, remove 1″ (2.5 cm) of insulation from vehicle wires identified in the previous step, and poke through the exposed wire to create a loop.
- Locate the 3900 harness included in your kit, strip off about 1 1/2″ (4 cm) of insulation from the end of the fused white and red wires, and 1″ from the end of the black wire.
- Make your connections using the poke-and-wrap technique (white wire to Ignition Source; red wire to Constant Source).
- Twist the end of the white wire and poke it through the loop that you created for the ignition source.
- Squeeze the loop shut, and tightly wrap the bare wire around the exposed wire at least 3 times.
- Fold the wire back, and generously wrap electrical tape around the connection, crossing over the insulation on both sides.
- Secure the connection with one zip tie directly over the wire-to-wire connection and another zip tie on a stress loop created about 1″ (2.5 cm) away from the connection.
- Repeat the same process for the red Constant Power wire.
- Locate the ring terminal, star washer and self-tapping screw in your installation kit to secure the black wire to the chassis:
- Twist the end of the black wire, fold it over on itself and insert the wire into the ring terminal.
- Crimp the ring terminal to the black wire.
- Slip the star washer over the self-tapping screw first, then over the ring terminal.
- Screw the wire to the chassis after ensuring there is nothing behind the mounting location. li>
5. Accessory installation.
If your installation has any accessories, please refer to the corresponding guide now.- After installing aaccessories or if you do not have any, tape all unused wires to the harness using electrical tape.
6. Cable connections.
- Connect both antenna connections to the GPS device ensuring the connections are finger-tight; do not over-tighten and damage the cables.
- Connect the 20-pin harness to the GPS device.
- As the GPS device powers up, observe the GPS and Cellular LEDs. Both LEDs will blink slowly and will begin to blink faster as it searches for signal. A solid amber LED indicates a cellular lock, and a solid green LED indicates a GPS lock.
If the installation is taking place in an area with limited view of the sky, the device may not reach full signal until the vehicle has been driven outside of that location.
7. Verify and secure the installation.
- Do not start the vehicle.
- To activate and register your device, with your vehicle card in hand, use the GPS Insight Verification App (iOS | Android). If you have verification or registration questions, please call 480-508-7478.
- After the installation has been verified, secure the installation with zip ties and tamper seal.
- Mount the device behind the dashboard cluster to a vent pipe or dash support and coil any unused wire, then secure them within the dashboard.
- Reassemble the vehicle’s dashboard and give the registration card to your GPS administrator.
