An Hours of Service (HOS) solution provides you with an electronic logging device and related tools to monitor driver logs to keep you fully compliant with HOS regulations.

Do I Need This?

Most drivers must follow the HOS Regulations if they drive a commercial motor vehicle, or CMV. In general, a CMV is a vehicle that is used as part of a business and is involved in interstate commerce and fits any of these descriptions:

  • Weighs 10,001 pounds or more
  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more
  • Is designed or used to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) not for compensation
  • Is designed or used to transport 9 or more passengers (including the driver) for compensation
  • Is transporting hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placards

ELD vs. AOBRD Software

While the ELD and AOBRD software does not appear to be different at first glance, there are significant differences that will affect your compliance with the FMCSA. The ELD Certified software provides new and FMSCA approved methods for your drivers to take control of their driving records and supports all the new features introduced in the recent Hours of Service Portal update.

How do I tell if I have AOBRD or ELD Certified Software on my tablet?

The easiest method to determine if you have AOBRD or ELD begins with the Sign In process. ELD Certified software now requires a custom password for drivers to access, view and edit their driver logs. This password not only ensures their driving records are kept secure, but also allows them to access the Driver Portal where they can maintain their logs from a desktop computer. Whereas, AOBRD software allows drivers, who have not received their password from the Fleet Administrator, to enter their Driver ID and tap Sign In without entering a password on the electronic logging device.

There are other differences, such as:

  • ELD Certified software refers to an exceptional circumstance in which a driver is permitted per HOS regulations to extend the maximum driving time as an exception. Whereas, AOBRD software refers to the same occurence as an exemption.
  • ELD Certified software refers to an event wherein a Driving (D) status is recorded but not added to a driver’s log as an Unidentified Driver event. Whereas, AOBRD software refers to the same event as an Unknown Driver event.

How do I upgrade?

If your fleet is outfitted with devices running AOBRD software, you have 2 years (December 2019) to update your devices. We recommend that you wait to update your fleet until all drivers are fully proficient with using the ELD.

To upgrade your fleet from AOBRD to ELD Certified software, please contact the HOS Support team.

For those with mixed fleets (ELD and AOBRD devices), we have indicated in our documentation where admin and driver procedures differ by including a note that will look like the following example:

EXAMPLE
For ELD users: A secure default password is automatically generated when a driver is added to the HOS Portal. If you did not receive a password from your administrator, or you have not yet changed your password in the Driver Portal, contact your administrator.
For AOBRD users: If you did not receive a password from your administrator, tap Sign In without entering a password.

Which reference materials should I use?

We have provided two sets of driver reference materials (AOBRD and ELD) for using the in-cab tablet and the Driver Portal. Please use the reference materials applicable to the software on your tablet.
