This optional installation procedure is normally not required. Please refer to the primary Installation Guide for complete device installation instructions and then only proceed with these instructions when necessary.
This optional installation guide provides instructions how to reroute power to the HD Pass-Thru cable directly from the vehicle battery. These steps are necessary to resolve an issue with some heavy-duty vehicle diagnostic ports not providing consistent power to the device. Before you continue, please be sure you have properly tested the device-to-vehicle connection for possible blown fuses or a master battery cut-off switch.
Tools you will need include a digital multimeter, one razor knife, high grade electrical tape, one butt connector, 16-18 AWG wire, one fuse holder, and one 3 amp fuse.
1. Identify the Cable Being Installed.
The color wire requiring the adjustment will depend on the type of cable being installed. Please use the table below to identify the cable you have before moving forward:
The Part Numbers listed above can be found printed on the cable.
2. Locate Section of Sheathing and Remove 4 in. / 10 cm.
Locate the section of cable that connects the replacement diagnostic port to the serial port on the back of the GPSI-4000HD. The illustrations below indicate which section of the cable is being modified:
Remove approximately 4 in. / 10 cm. of sheathing from this portion of the cable; be sure not to cut too deep, so as to not damage the wires underneath.
3. Cut the Constant Power Wire.
Depending on the type of cable you identified in Step 1, locate and cut the color wire indicated below; this wire is the constant power wire that you will need to reroute:
9-Pin 250K – RED Wire
9-Pin 500K – ORANGE Wire
16-Pin Hino – RED Wire
16-Pin Volvo/Mack – ORANGE Wire
Be sure you have identified the correct cable before cutting into any wires.
4. Cap Off Excess Wiring
Install a butt connector to the portion of wire going to the replacement diagnostic port, and tape back this portion of the wire to the cable.
5. Locate Constant Power Circuit.
Using a digital multimeter, locate a vehicle circuit that will provide the device a continuous 12-24 VDC (+) whether the engine is on or off.
6. Install an Inline Fuse Holder.
Once you have identified the constant power source, use the poke and wrap method to connect an inline fuse holder to this wire and extend the other end to the HD Pass-Thru cable.
7. Connect Remaining Wire to Inline Fuse Holder.
Using a butt connector, connect the loose end of the inline fuse holder to the exposed wire on the HD Pass-Thru cable, then secure this connection using electrical tape and a zip tie.
8. Connect the GPS device and verify operation.
Connect the HD Pass-Thru cable to the GPS device, then connect the other end of the HD Pass-Thru cable to the vehicle’s diagnostic port
To verify operation of the GPS device, call 866-477-4321 option 2.
9. Secure each connection.
Once the GPS device has been verified with Support, secure each connection using tamper seal compound.
